העוג והלהג

שיר של וואלאס סטיבנס מתוך ״הרמוניום״, ספרו הראשון, שהתפרסם ב-1923. השיר בנוי על מערכת של סימליות צלילית (sound symbolism) --הענק קשור לעיצורים גרוניים ותנועות אחוריות. הילדות לעיצורים שפתיים, תנועות לא אחוריות, והצליל /l/, שמסמל את הלשון עצמה.  על שני סוגים של סימבוליזם צלילי ותפקידם בשיר הזה ובשירה של סטיבנס בכלל אפשר לקרוא במאמר מעניין של חוקרת הספרות מארי בורוף.

From Wallace Stevens' first volume of poetry, Harmonium (a signed first edition of which here). This poem is built on a system of sound symbolism, wherein the girls are associated with labial consonants and front vowels, and the giant with "gutturals" (velars and, in Hebrew, uvulars and pharyngeals).
